Launching this summer: Community Journalism Virtual Fellowship. Apply Now!

The Journalism of Color Training Center is looking for future community journalists-in-training! As part of our curriculum building, and because evaluation is always worth it, this mini-fellowship will invite 5-7 individuals to work with us "from pitch to promotion," as we assess and improve the Journalism of Color community journalism curriculum. No experience is necessary - this training will discuss the ethics of community journalism, pitching, interviewing, portfolio-building, and so much more! Participants will have the opportunity to report on social injustice and social movement work, as community journalists-in-training, and they will have the opportunity to more deeply learn about community organizing work along the way.

This virtual fellowship will take place from July - July 31, with day-long trainings (10am-5pm CST) occurring on July 1, July 8, July 15, July 22, and July 29. Participants must be available to attend all training dates. (Reasonable accommodations can be discussed.). Other training opportunities, including asynchronous training events, will be offered alongside mentorship and additional support.

This is an experiential training, and participants will be expected to publish a news-piece with the Journalism of Color Training Center newsroom.

Participants will be paid a modest stipend, $500, upon publishing their news-piece and completing a learning reflection.

Application Process: The application process has three rounds, and after each round we will evaluate the fellowship candidates.

Round 1: Potential participants will need to complete the Google Forms application (see below)

Round 2: Potential participants will be asked to write a 5-paragraph essay or record a 5-minute audio clip/video on one problem that they see in journalism. This essay should cite 2-5 sources.

Round 3: Potential participants will need to conduct a 45–60-minute interview with members of the JOCTC team.

Applications are due by March 3rd at 11:59pm CST. Round two will begin in April and round three will begin in June. Applicants will be communicated with via email.
